The Pride of Pflugerville

Gibbs Honored by SEC; Baseball Remains No. 2Micah Gibbs has been named the SEC player of the week after having a monster weekend at Georgia going .444 with two bombs and 4 RBI and .385 with 2 homers, four RBI and four runs scored for the week. Micah comes to LSU from Pflugerville, Texas (nope, not a typo, it really is spelled that way). What?!? You’ve never heard of Pflugerville?!? Come on! The Pflugerville Panthers won 55 consecutive football games in the years 1958-1962…and you call yourselves sports fans! Anyhoo, a hearty way to go is in order for the Pride of Pflugerville, Micah Gibbs.

Quick note, the Tigers should be easily handling up on Grambling tonight at 6:30 in the Box. Gonna be great weather so grab a jacket and you all should get out and catch the game. And if you can’t, don’t forget you can watch it live!

LSU Athletics Facilities vs. Mother Nature

lsu-with-stormEarly Thursday morning LSU’s campus was subjected to the severe weather that rolled through the area.  High winds and heavy rain slammed Baton Rouge as most slept……I watched from the front porch.  There was constant lightning and loud thunder, so I knew the bulk of the storm was close, but didn’t consider the fact that damage might be widespread.

As students walked to class Thursday, limbs were down, some trees uprooted and insulation was strewn about near the Energy Coast and Environment Building.  Wait, wait…….insulation strewn about?!?  As I was looking for a parking spot Thursday morning after zig zagging my way to campus avoiding tree-blocked streets, I noticed the stuff on the ground and wondered where it came from.  More after the jump……

Turns out that powerful wind gusts ripped part of the indoor practice facility’s roof off and blew the insulation all the way across Nicholson, down Nicholson Dr. Extension and throughout the adjacent parking lots.

Jam-Packed Weekend for LSU Sports Begins Today

lsu-logoIt all starts this afternoon as the LSU Men’s Tennis team takes on Auburn at 2pm in “Dub” Robinson Stadium.  The Tennis team hasn’t gotten much pub this year, but they are ranked #14 in the country as SEC gears up to start today.  The team is led by Senior Michael Venus, who is ranked #9 in the country’s top singles players.  Along with freshman, Neal Skupski from Liverpool, they are the #13 doubles team.  Auburn comes equipped with the #11 doubles team and should prove for a tough match for the LSU duo.  Senior James Clusky from Ireland has also been playing well.   The Tigers will also host #20 Alabama on Sunday at 1pm.  If you’re in town and not busy, head over there today or after the baseball game Sunday, which I’ll get to in a minute.

Later tonight, the LSU Baseball Tigers will begin a three-game series with the Big Ten’s Illinois at 7pm at Alex Box.  LSU is red hot to start the season outscoring opponents 109-25 in nine games so far.  Also, all of LSU’ starting position players are hitting over .300.  The Tigers are undefeated and are the #1 team in all the land in 3 different polls this week (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and USA Today/ESPN).  The Tigers will play on Saturday at 2pm and again on Sunday at 11am…have a  bloody mary and go experience the Tigers win again in the new “Box”.  More after the jump……

The women’s basketball will be playing Miss. St. in the second round of the SEC tournament tonight at 9pm.  The ladies are 17-9, 10-4 this season having won 8 of their last 10.  Much like the men, the women are overachieving this year as well.  If they win, they will play the winner of Georgia-Vanderbilt on Saturday at 8pm.  If they win that, they will play for the championship to be held at 6:30 on Sunday.  all games are being played at Little Rock, AR’s Alltel Arena.

LSU Basketball Continues to Overachieve

lsu-basketballLSU comes from behind to beat Kentucky in Lexington and now owns the 2008-2009 SEC title outright!!  These guys continue to find ways to win and have done so 10 games in a row overall and for 13 consecutive SEC games.

The visiting team locker room doors were closed Saturday night in Rupp Arena, but ESPN’s Pat Forde could hear chants of “LSU, LSU, LSU” coming from inside.  It was just a part of the story of LSU’s season of which he found compelling enough to write one of his own……. click here  (more after the jump)

Now that the Tigers are 25-4 and have won 4 straight while being ranked in the top 25 nationally, there is no doubt they will move up in those polls and possibly receive a 3-5 seed in the NCAA tournament.  However, I believe that with still 2 games left; one at home against Vandy and another at Auburn, Trent Johnson will coach each of them the way he has coached the last 13 SEC games the Tigers have played and won….. not thinking about the postseason.

Just When You Thought You Were Safe From LSU Football Recruiting….

Bryce Brown

That’s right!  Rivals.com #1 rated player and top running back, Bryce Brown from Wichita, KS is visiting LSU this weekend.  Previously committed to Miami, he backed out and did not sign with the Hurricanes on Feb 4.  His visit to LSU has been talked about for about a week now, but I was skeptical he would actually make the trip.  As of this morning the plan was for him to arrive to campus today with his parents.  His father is from Bogalusa, LA which is only about 75 miles from Baton Rouge, as the crow flies.  He still has family living there.

He will get a first hand look at all that LSU has to offer to make him a star in college football.  The facilities here are second to none.  Just ask Charles Scott, Keiland Williams, or any of the other RB’s on the roster.

Picking up Brown would be hugemongous for this class.  The already signed Michael Ford, is a highly rated running back out of Leesville, LA.  The two together would be a dominant force in the backfield in years to come.  As of now, with Ford as the only high profile RB in this year’s signing class, Les Miles would definitely have to make signing another RB in next year’s class a priority.  However, if Brown were to sign with the Tigers, LSU recruiters could spend their efforts at other positions.  More after the jump…..

LSU Outlasts Florida in Shootout, 81-75

32 points, including six three pointers, 10-11 on freebies, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds….. Marcus Thornton gave a huge effort in front of a huge crowd and a national audience on ESPN to lift the Tigers past Florida Tuesday night in the PMAC.

It was certainly everything a shootout is meant to be.  Did I mention Thortnon had 6 three’s, 5 in the first half?  As well as LSU played in the first half, Florida matched everything the Tigers threw at them.  LSU may not have played their best defense in the first half, but neither team could miss.  It was back and forth the entire 20 minutes.  Florida went into the locker room with a four point lead.

LSU got some great contributions for Garrett Temple with 21 points and 7 rebounds (3-4 three’s, 4-4 free throws).  Tasmin Mitchell had 12 and 8 and Bo Spencer had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.  The scary stat, which has become a trend lately…….3, yes 3 bench points.  Terry Martin came off the bench to hit a jumper, get fouled and make the free throw…..that’s it.  The lack of a solid sixth man or any bench play for that matter may hurt the Tigers in March.

Tasmin Mitchell “Just Wants to Play”

[caption id="attachment_1365" align="alignleft" width="342" caption="Tasmin Mitchell after beating J.J. Reddick and Duke in LSU's most recent Final Four season, '05-'06"]Tasmin Mitchell after beating J.J. Reddick and Duke in LSU's most recent Final Four season, '05-'06[/caption]

Tasmin Mitchell is getting some great recognition in his Junior year.  He was named SEC Player of the Week back on Feb 9, following two great performances against Georgia and Alabama.  He was denied the same honor after averaging 30.5 points and 10 rebounds in games against Miss. St (2OT) and Ole Miss….UK’s Jodie Meeks won that week(34.0 pts, 6.0 rebs).   More after the jump…..

He is averaging 16.8 points and 7.3 rebounds a game this year (also…1.9 assists and 1.5 steals per game).  Solid stats for a forward in college basketball.  And today, ESPN has recognized him with a great story of his career at LSU thus far.  He has seen 3 coaches (one was interim, Butch Pierre), a Final Four in his freshman season (27-8, 14-2), a lowly 13-18 season two years later, and now the Tigers have turned it around and are at 23-4 with four games to play in this regular season.
