LSU Basketball Dominates the Gamecocks in SEC Home Opener

pmac1First off, I’d like to say that I’m sad to see Brandon Lafell leave LSU.  He announced his plans to enter the NFL draft yesterday.  Once he learned how to catch 2 years ago, he was a force at the wide receiver position for the Tigers.  He will be missed, but I speak for all of us when I say, best of luck, #1.  Charles Scott, Ciron Black and everyone else that should stay here are doing just that, it appears.

Now to last night’s game.  I went with the newly engaged “Undefeated”, his fiance, and some others to watch the Tigers play last night in the PMAC.  We also wanted to see in person if the Tigers could turn their recent skid around and win a game.  The Tigers not only won the game against South Carolina 85-68, but they played very aggressive and hustled throughout on every play.  There was a little slacking at the end as they were up 15 or so, but that’s to be expected, I guess.  The Tigers were not going to let a ball just roll out of bounds without a great effort to dive for it, which they did several times.  They ran hard all night and completely smothered the Gamecocks’ offense.  One quick fun fact which has nothing to do with any of that…. South Carolina shot an abysmal 36% at the free throw line (8-22).  That is just sad.  The Tigers hit 77% of their free throws.

Trent Johnson had the Tigers fired up.  A large and very animated crowd didn’t hurt either.  Fans came out in abundance last night (11,393).  Really though, Coach Johnson has these Tigers playing above their efforts of years past.  Their great hustle and will to win was evident the entire game.  Efforts like this will lead to great things……12 steals for instance!  5 for Bo Spencer and 3 for Garrett Temple.  This type of effort is not something the average fan would normally have seen with Brady at the helm.  Johnson has instilled in these Tigers a winning attitude and as a fan, you have to love that.

I See London, I See France…

I see the Quick Change lady’s underpants. Well hello all. There’s not a whole lot going on in the world of LSUtopia so I wanted to tell you all to get to the PMAC and watch the SEC opener against South Carolina tomorrow night. And if you’re not in to Tiger basketball, go for the halftime show. Yes, the one and only Quick Change will be there in all their glory. This husband and wife duo magically change from outfit to outfit in the blink of an eye, all without a flobbiddy, pierced nipplegate accident(really Janet, did they pop your boob when you pierced it? Cause it looked like a deflated balloon.) Aaannnyyyhooo,  after the jump is a little video of their act and if you like it on the interweb, wait till you see it in person. And who knows, the Tigers just might make you a fan as well.

LSU Road “Woes” Continue

LSU coming off an embarrassing 30 point loss to Utah continued their road struggles as they lose the SEC opener to Alabama 65-59.  LSU never had the lead in this game and still haven’t won a game in Tuscaloserville since 2004.  With LSU (12-3, 0-1) in foul trouble the entire game, the bench did nothing to contribute offensively.  Quintin Thorton was the lone bench player to score with 2 points.  Tasmin Mitchell was called with 2 fouls in the first 10 minutes of the game and sat the rest of the first half.  This game was a very physical, foul happy, contest.  If a player farted they were called with a foul.  This is a  funny stat to me, Alex Farrer, LSU’s “white knight” received 7 minutes of playing time and fouled out with as many points as you or I, 0 points.

The first half was filled with sloppy shooting by LSU with them shooting 31% from the field.  Alabama shot 43% from the field and took a 6 point lead (30-24)  going to the locker room.  The second half was filled with more offense.  LSU was lead in scoring by Marcus Thorton with 21 points.  Bo Spencer and Tasmin Mitchell both had 10.  Chris Johnson led the Tigers in rebounding with 10.  Alabama was led in scoring by Senario Hillman with 24.  The game was very close going into the closing minutes.  The deficit became as many as 9 with 11 minutes left.  LSU cut the lead to 2 at the 3:30 mark and had a chance to tie the game.  This is the play of the game for Alabama, and if LSU misses the NCAA tournament by one game, so far this will be the play that cost them……Marcus Thorton had the ball in the front court trying to tie the game and he was raped, murdered, felt up, what ever you want to call it, and the officials in a foul happy contest let the ball go and Alabama scored on the break away.  That pretty much took the wind out of LSU’s sail.  LSU returns home to play a tough South Carolina opponent Wednesday night at the PMAC.  South Carolina is 12-2 on the year and beat Auburn yesterday 68-56.  This tiger fan is eager to see how the team will respond at home after suffering 2 straight road losses.

Ron Cooper Added as LSU Defensive Backs Coach

ron-cooperLes Miles announced today that Ron Cooper will take over coaching the LSU secondary.  He has been coaching various positions at South Carolina for the past 5 years on the defensive side of the ball, where last year as the safties coach, the Gamecocks had the #2 pass defense in the country last year allowing only 160 yards per game.  Even though LSU beat SC this year in Columbia, the Tigers only threw for 199 yards.  That’s not saying much given our quarterback situation this year, but I’m really psyched about this hire.

Cooper has 9 years of head coaching experience at the college level with Eastern Michigan, Louisville, and Alabama A&M.  While at Louisville, his defenses were in the top 10 in the nation.  He also held the defensive coordinator position at Mississippi State in 2003 the year before moving to Columbia.

LSU is finally doing what they should do under Les Miles and assemble the best coaches and players money can buy.  We’re LSU dammit and we should have the best.

Sunday Morning Hangover: LSU wins, disappoints, kinda sucks

I’ll have to make this one quick as I’m trying to get out of this butthole of a city (Columbia sucks, hard).  Anyway, this week was much like last week, but we just played a shittier team.  I’ll give the “D” some credit for the second half they played…they held their own.  However, I think this is more of a factor of Carolina having an inept offense as opposed to our “D” being all that good.  I’m still not sold on Jarrett Lee.  Ya, ya…he’s young.  I understand.  There’s a difference in making SOME mistakes and making LOTS of mistakes.  He makes lots.  On a positive note, welcome back Keiland.  Where the hell have you been?  I’ll make a more comprehensive post later on in the day.  I gotta get outta here or I’m gonna grow a mullet.

LSU Moving On and the Highly Underrated SEC Weather Forecasts

Well, its Wednesday again.  As explained last week, this is the day that as Tiger fans, we are usually finished riding a big win or getting over a big loss.  We all know what happened last Saturday in Gainesville and today is the day we begin getting excited for the game this Saturday against South Carolina in Columbia at 8ET on ESPN.

South Carolina has a tough defense with a strong front line that very well could put a strain on LSU’s offense, much like Florida did last week.  On offense, SC thinks they have found their QB in a 6’2″ 221lb, true freshman.  He has impressed the Gamecock coaches so far so he will get the nod.  After the way LSU played last week, I believe that the Tigers match up pretty evenly with the Gamecocks and I look forward to seeing if they can overcome last week’s embarassment and get back on the right track.

There hasn’t been much LSU buzz this week around campus or in the Baton Rouge area.  I think some people are still experiencing the bad-loss-hangover.  However, today is the day to lift up your heads, put on a purple and/or gold shirt for the first time since last Saturday and get ready for the next big matchup against the “Ole Ball Coach”, Steve Spurrier.  I will be traveling to Columbia for the game.  It will be my first time there and I am really looking forward to it.  You can bet that SC will be ready after the Tigers beat them in Death Valley last season.  Coach Miles used a Spurrier-esque, trick play of his own when Matt Flynn took the snap on a field goal and flipped it over his head to a streaking Colt David.  The result was a touchdown, a big smile from Miles, and a look of disbelief from Spurrier.  And you can bet the “Ole Ball Coach” and the SC players haven’t forgotten.
