LSU Stumbles in Final Home Game vs. Vandy, 75-67

LSU had only a single lead in this one….. 2-0. After that, the Tigers’ goal closed up and they decided defense was overrated. We knew Vanderbilt had a big guy that would give us trouble. We didn’t think A.J. Ogilvy would come in and score a career high 33 points. The ‘Dores took complete advantage of mismatches all night and the Tigers had little to answer back to keep their 10 game winning streak alive. More after the jump……
Not to mention, LSU shot an abysmal 36% to Vandy’s 51% tonight. The Tigers also struggled from the line shooting only 68%, and from the 3-point line, 28%.

There’s No Room in the Bandwagon

So I’m listening to our lovely local AM radio here in the Capital City the other day and I hear them discussing the seating “issues” at the PMAC. Several people called in complaining that there’s not enough room for the students and that they were very upset that there was a line they had to wait in to get in and then never even got tickets etc. While I do totally understand that the students keep the game loud and the energy flowing throughout the game(sorry cheerleaders-you get an A for effort though), I totally disagree with their gripe. All because of what we all call the Bandwagon Effect….

LSU Outlasts Florida in Shootout, 81-75
32 points, including six three pointers, 10-11 on freebies, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds….. Marcus Thornton gave a huge effort in front of a huge crowd and a national audience on ESPN to lift the Tigers past Florida Tuesday night in the PMAC.
It was certainly everything a shootout is meant to be. Did I mention Thortnon had 6 three’s, 5 in the first half? As well as LSU played in the first half, Florida matched everything the Tigers threw at them. LSU may not have played their best defense in the first half, but neither team could miss. It was back and forth the entire 20 minutes. Florida went into the locker room with a four point lead.
LSU got some great contributions for Garrett Temple with 21 points and 7 rebounds (3-4 three’s, 4-4 free throws). Tasmin Mitchell had 12 and 8 and Bo Spencer had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. The scary stat, which has become a trend lately…….3, yes 3 bench points. Terry Martin came off the bench to hit a jumper, get fouled and make the free throw…..that’s it. The lack of a solid sixth man or any bench play for that matter may hurt the Tigers in March.

LSU Basketball Up to #18 in Both Polls
The LSU basketball team continues to rise in the polls after two more conference wins last week. The Tigers are now ranked #18 in both polls. The rest of the polls are here: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/rankings
This will be a tough week for the Tigers with Florida coming to town tomorrow night to play in the PMAC. The Tigers will have to opportunity to not only keep their SEC winning streak alive, but also show the country what they’re made of since the game will be on ESPN at 8pm. This coming Saturday, the Tigers will visit Lexington to take on Kentucky and can be viewed on CBS.
These are two great chances for the Tigers to impress nation-wide viewers with Selection Sunday approaching. Wins against both teams may not do much to boost LSU’s RPI, but since humans do play a part in the selection of seeds for the NCAA tournament, it would leave a nice lasting impression to make it to next Sunday with an improved 25-4 record.

These Tigers are Exceeding Expectations
[caption id="attachment_1290" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Semi-early prediction, dare I say?: Coach of the Year?"]

The LSU Tiger Basketball team is 19-4. That’s right, 19-4! After this afternoon’s win over Alabama, they have now won seven straight SEC games and are not only winning them, they are blowing teams out with an average score over those seven games 80-63. This team continues to find ways to take control of games and pour it on when they need to. They are packing the PMAC once again and to the surprise of a lot of fans, are alone at the top of the SEC standings halfway through conference play (7-1).
We were all skeptical at the beginning of the season of what kind of team we had this year. Some said, “wait ’til we play a team with a pulse”. Others wrote, even to turn last year’s 13-18 record around to 18-13 this year, would be a huge accomplishment (paraphrasing). I thought the same too. How could basically the same group from last year turn it around and play so much better in one season? …….especially after the early departure of 6-10 freshman and over-achiever, Anthony Randolph, to try out the NBA. Well, they have done it and it’s pretty exciting to watch.

LSU Picks Up HUGE Road Win
First off, I want to apologize for my lack of writing an article after the Xavier game. I was out of town in Houston listening to the legendary Dr. James Andrews lecture on the shoulder. Secondly, I don’t remember the last time I’ve cursed so much watching a sporting event. This game had everything you could ask for. LSU took a 2-0 lead to start the game and pretty much dominated the first half. Through the first 9 minutes of the game, LSU was 10-14 from the field and 3-6 from three point land. The refs in this game were definitely bi-polar. The first half you could draw blood and no foul would be called only to blink and a foul would be called on you in the second half. LSU took a 43-38 lead at the half.
The second half was 10 times more exciting. LSU had a 14 point lead at one point only to go ice cold for about a 6 minute period. The only way LSU stayed in the game during that span was thanks to a Bruce Pearl technical foul. The last 3 minutes of the game was a possession difference. With less than one minute left LSU hit the free throws when it counted to go on for the 79-73 victory. Marcus Thorton continued his red hot scoring with 29 points. Bo Spencer played exceptional scoring 15, and Chris Johnson was probably the player of the game with a double double 14/14, but had several key blocks when it counted. LSU shot a respectable 47.5% from the field and 80% from the stripe (16-20). The memorable moment of the game that really stood out to me was when LSU was down by 2 with less than 5 minutes left and the camera showed Trent Johnson on the bench, who was cooler than the other side of the pillow. I was on my treadmill running at a mock 3 pace cursing up a storm, and I read Trent Johnson’s lips and he said “calm down” to his players. Right then and there I knew had John Brady been coaching this team, we would have lost by 10, but Coach Johnson has the cool demeanor to not only calm his players down, but also the crazy fans. Terry Martin had 4 points for the only bench points. Freshmen Delwan Graham and Storm Warren played some good minutes and I’m glad they did. They got a chance to experience what it’s like to be in the fire at a quality SEC opponents house. This was a huge win for LSU that might come back and help them come “dancing” time. LSU (16-4, 4-1) returns home to play Arkansas at 4, and we need the PMAC to be rock’in againn!!!!!

LSU Rips the Rebs
Chris Johnson scored the first bucket of the game on a slam dunk and that was about as close as Ole Miss would come. LSU went on a 12-0 run to start the game with Ole Miss’ first basket coming at the 15:33 mark. Garrett Temple was 3 for 4 from three point land in the first half and finished the game with 14 points, 9 assists, and 7 rebounds. Tasmin Mitchell added 17 points and Marcus Thorton scored 13. LSU played flawless defense the entire 40 minutes with no player ever really in foul trouble. The same cannot be said for the Rebels, who had 13 turnovers and LSU added 21 points off those turnovers.
LSU took a 41-18 lead into the locker room shooting 46% from the field in the first half and finishing with an incredible 49% for the game. Terry Martin and Quintin Thorton looked really comfortable coming off the bench. Martin and Thorton both added 6 points each and that is a much needed contribution. LSU’s bench is not very deep when it comes to experience and these 2 guys really need to keep it going in order for LSU to be successful. LSU out rebounded the Rebs 43 to 29 and also added 11 offensive rebounds which is always a good sign. Ole Miss tried to full court press and LSU easily worked their way underneath the basket for an easy bucket consistently. This was one of the better “all around” games I have seen in a long time for the tigers. LSU will try to add to their PMAC winning streak when they take on a tough Mississippi State Bulldog team Wednesday night. I expect the PMAC to be rocking as this could be a special year for the Tigers if they continue to play like they have the past 2 games!
I See London, I See France…
…I see the Quick Change lady’s underpants. Well hello all. There’s not a whole lot going on in the world of LSUtopia so I wanted to tell you all to get to the PMAC and watch the SEC opener against South Carolina tomorrow night. And if you’re not in to Tiger basketball, go for the halftime show. Yes, the one and only Quick Change will be there in all their glory. This husband and wife duo magically change from outfit to outfit in the blink of an eye, all without a flobbiddy, pierced nipplegate accident(really Janet, did they pop your boob when you pierced it? Cause it looked like a deflated balloon.) Aaannnyyyhooo, after the jump is a little video of their act and if you like it on the interweb, wait till you see it in person. And who knows, the Tigers just might make you a fan as well.
