You Win Some, You Lose Some.
This past weekend was an up and down one for LSU sports. On the down side, the men lost to Xavier 80-70. The Tigers went about 9 minutes in the 2nd half without scoring and allowed a first half lead to slip away. The lead at the end of the first half was only one point, 37-36, but anyway……. Speaking of the first half, it was a great one to watch. There were a bunch of ties and lead changes. It was just back and forth for 20 minutes. Then the Tigers went colder than our fellow LSUtopian is in Oklahoma City, OK today (wind chill at noon was 8 there).
LSU played well enough on defense to win it, they just simply couldn’t score when they needed to. On the up-side, Marcus Thornton blessed us with yet another 30 point game gaining him SEC player of the week, averaging 30.5 points in the last two games. In those games against Miss. St. and Xavier he shot almost as well from the 3-point line (53%) as his did anywhere else (55%). Congrats to him. More after the jump.
The Tigers’ (15-4, 3-1) next game will be Wednesday night in Knoxville against the Tennessee Volunteers (12-6, 3-1). The Volunteers are a pretty average team and they haven’t beaten anyone as of late by any significant amount, except for beating Vandy in Nashville by 13. They also lost a close one by 2, to #24 Memphis over the weekend. If the Tigers play their game, they should leave with the win.

Look Out! There’re Snakes in the Grass!
Damn, and my morning started off really well. Then I read things like this from DandyDon. Sounds a little fishy too, with daddy “interviewing” for a job at Tenn and all. Just think how hard it would be to be an 18 year old kid trying to make a decision on your future with all these adults around you pumping smoke up your ass and also having your father involved. And hey, I know all’s fair in football and war, but lay off our players or I’ll cut you.
“In other recruiting news, Nick Saban of Alabama and new head coach Lane Kiffin and defensive line coach Ed Orgeron of Tennessee are trying to convince LSU commitment Janzen Jackson to decommit from LSU and sign with Alabama or Tennessee. more after jump…

John Chavis looks to be LSU’s next D-Coordinator
It’s been a busy day for sports news with 3 NFL coaches being fired, an interesting NFL playoff lineup, and Nick Saban suspends Alabama’s Outland Trophy winner and All-American, OT Andre Smith, from the Sugar Bowl for “improper dealings with an agent”; he’s likely to enter the NFL draft (top 5 projection)…… He was sent home from New Orleans soon after the team arrived to continue preparations for Utah.
However, news also broke that Les Miles might have found his new Defensive Coordinator. John Chavis has coached at Tennessee under the recently departed Phil Fulmer for the last 14 seasons. It was also reported that LSU made a more lucrative offer than Clemson, who was also trying to snag Chavis. Despite the Vols’ struggles this year, they finished 4th nationally in total defense. They have had other solid defenses over his tenure there, including holding LSU to only one offensive touchdown in last year’s SEC Championship game.
New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin will be bringing in his dad, Monte, to take over at Chavis’ former position. Chavis may also be bring with him to LSU a defensive tackles coach and a defensive ends coach, that both coached with him at Tennessee.

Fear
Since I don’t want to be the only person talking sense on the website i figured I’d look for a little help from Sports Illustrated. Here is a blurb from Stewart Mandel.
Around this time a year ago, with LSU about to face former coach Nick Saban’s Alabama team for the first time, I put on a psychologist’s cap to answer a question from a reader who wondered why Tigers fans held such disdain toward a man who had done so much good for their program.
My (condensed) answer: Hatred, at its core, is rooted in fear. LSU fans hate Saban for taking the Alabama job because deep down, they fear the potential implications for their program. … LSU faithful would never have become angry at Saban to begin with if there wasn’t a legitimate reason to fear him.
This, of course, elicited mockery from our friends on the Bayou, whose team would eventually win a national championship. Alabama, meanwhile, was weeks away from losing to Louisiana-Monroe.
But here we are a year later, on the eve of Saban’s long-awaited return to Baton Rouge, and the circumstances have changed dramatically. ‘Bama is now the team on top of the college football world, while the Tigers are still reeling from lopsided losses to Florida and Georgia.
Take a guess what kind of e-mails I’m receiving.
LSU Welcomes Saban and the Highly Underrated SEC Gameday Weather Forecasts
Saturday night will be the first time Nick Saban has lead a team into Death Valley since LSU followed him in and beat Ole Miss 27-24 in November 2004. LSU will play host to Saban’s Crimson Tide of Alabama at 2:30 CT on CBS.
Saban certainly left large shoes to fill when he left the Tigers to coach in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins. Coach Saban brought LSU 3 bowl wins in 5 tries, 2 SEC Championships, and one National Champonship. Not a bad record for 5 years on the job. It is an understatement that Saban gave Tiger fans something to be proud of again. Some of us can still barely remember the days before him of Gerry Dinardo or even Coach Curly Hallman. Those tough times in Tiger history seem almost like ancient memories now. Saban turned it around here at LSU and we were grateful…….
……….Until he lied and took the head coach opening left at Alabama after the departure of Mike Shula. Saban repeatedly told the media and Miami Dolphin fans, “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach”. Well we all know what happened next and before we knew it, Nick Saban was wearing a crimson tie standing in front of Bama fans saying how happy he was to be there. Rumors have spread that his wife was the main cause for the decision to leave LSU for bigger city, but then realized how much she liked the college town. Either way it worked out great for the Saban family. He has lied his way to a $4 Million per year salary.
Les Miles, Optimistic as Usual
In Les Miles’ weekly press conference, he spoke mostly of the upcoming game with Alabama and left last week’s Tulane game behind us. He made it clear that the team is aware that the mistakes are what is causing the most concern for the team and the fans. Like he says every week, the team is making a conscious effort to correct the mistakes. It’s great to hear, but to be honest, have we as fans noticed any considerable improvement since the mistakes began??
When asked a question about Nick Saban and Bama’s #1 ranking. He replied and I paraphrase, “We are aware of who coaches that team and what their ranking is”. He went on to say that all the things that surround the game: CBS’s 2:30 CT broadcast, ESPN’s Gameday crew broadcasting from LSU’s campus, Nick Saban’s return to Tiger Stadium for the first time since leaving in 2005, and the #1 ranking of Alabama, will all stay on the “perimeter”. The team is focused on what they have to do this week and they are not worried about anything else.
There was a question about a 6:30 am Sunday meeting he had with the players after the Tulane game. Miles responded that what was said that morning was private and he wasn’t going to repeat anything in depth. Les Miles is known for being very optimistic when he speaks to the media. However, when he speaks of a private meeting in which details are kept secret, it makes it a little more obvious for those who couldn’t tell, that he is giving the media all they need to hear and leaving the real business of the team between him, the other coaches and the players.

Open Thread: A Mid-Season Review
On ESPN today they had an article discussing each of the conferences at the mid-point of the season. Who are the biggest surprises, disappointments, offensive and defensive MVP’s.
So what do you think? This is an open discussion. I will give my thoughts on the SEC but feel free to discuss other conferences or all of D-I. If you don’t like my picks they are open to bashing
Biggest surprises – Honestly, it would be easy for me to say Vanderbilt but I am going with Alabama. They were not highly ranked at the beginning of the season and they have been very impressive so far. This is a young team and it just goes to show that Saban is a really good coach. I also think Vanderbilt will trail off in the second half of the season.

WARNING: You need to get ready for it. That ridiculous co-worker of yours is going to tell you this morning about how awesome LSU is going to be next year because we had a good recruiting class. He’ll tell you how we signed all these massive recruits and regurgitate a bunch of stats to you that he memorized in the last 24 hours…half of which are completely wrong. This phenomina happens each and every year after signing day and lasts about a week. The fact is, 80% of these guys wont see the field at all in 2009, and 95% of them wont make any kind of impact. I’m happy as a pig in shit we nailed damn near all the guys that we went after, but let’s have these guys get through prom before we annoint them BCS champions!
