Former LSU Star Glen “Big Baby” Davis Coming into His Own

Big Baby has turned up his game. The former LSU Star averaged 21 minutes and 7 points per game in the regular season playing in his second year with the Boton Celtics. However, after losing Kevin Garnett for at least the first round of the playoffs, Big Baby stepped in and averaged a solid 18 points and 41 minutes a game. The Celts moved past the Bulls after a hard fought series that went all 7 games. The Celtics meet the Magic in the second round tonight.
The Dust Settles and LSU Basketball is #17
What a season for the Tigers! This year’s team surpassed all preseason expectations and played with a new attitude, thanks to 1st year LSU coach, Trent Johnson. The Tigers had the best conference record in SEC (13-3) winning game after game down the stretch. Only SEC losses were the first game at Alabama and the last two against Vanderbilt and at Auburn. We will even admit here that when the season kicked off, we knew we had some talent and exciting players, but we didn’t think LSU would have the season they did.
The Tigers relied on the offense of Marcus Thornton, Bo Spencer, and Tasmin Mitchell. The bulk of the defense was left up to Garrett Temple and Chris Johnson. All of which except for Spencer and Mitchell, are leaving LSU as seniors. It should be noted that Tasmin Mitchell is testing the NBA waters, but has not hired an agent, leaving a return to the Tigers as an option.
Anyway, back to my thought; the Tigers were very shallow and inexperienced on the bench this year and the above five guys would have to carry the weight of the team most of the way if they were going to do something special. Much to Tiger fans’ surprise, that’s exactly what they did. Night in and night out, the tigers found a way to win games and won the SEC conference title. Awards were passed out (Thornton-SEC Player of the Year, T. Johnson-SEC Coach of the Year, Mitchell-1st Team SEC, Temple and C. Johnson-2nd team SEC) and LSU got ready for what was next.

LSUtopia’s ESPN Bracket Challenge Winner
Well March Madness is finally over and we have a winner for our first annual LSUtopia ESPN Bracket Challenge. It was a close race all the way to the finish with Leaky Wader 1 pulling out the win by only 50 points with 1450 over jtlagger 7′s 1400. Much like UNC this year, Leaky started off in first place, stumbled a bit and then eventually ended in first place. I ended the contest in 8th which might not seem too great, but I was purposely trying for 8th place so the joke’s on you. Being that Leaky is my future brother in law, I can’t get in to my typical sarcastic/smart ass rants like I normally do. My Granny always said, if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all…but she also taught me this. So as I promised, your gift of my signed and personally messaged losing bracket will be sent out within the next week, oh, and you get the good piece of turkey at Thanksgiving this year. Thanks goes out to everyone who signed up to play and even though you lost, here’s a little parting gift just to say thanks. (except for lsupoop and BMOT50, damn, is this how yall picked your brackets this year?) after jump

ESPN Tourney Challenge Update

Going in to the Sweet Sixteen we have one person sitting atop the leader board in the LSUtopia ESPN Tournament Challenge. So how does it feel to have sold your soul to the Devil, POPATOPJAM? My usual supernatural witchcraft has not worked this year at all and sacrificing chickens (no, it’s not a video of chicken genocide, you weirdo) to the Bracket gods is a dirty business; moving on to goats next year. After Wake Forest butt humped pretty much everyone’s Sweet Sixteen match ups, we are all still looking pretty good with our Elite Eight picks. This hasn’t been too tricky of a year and some people, i.e. yours truly, tried to over think some of the pairings and it bit them in the tush. But we do have a tight race for the top spot between: POPATOPJAM(560), amycomeaux 1(550), lsuetg 1(540) and CMLT for 3(540) and it could still go to any one of them. So congrats, so far, to the front runners. Whoever does finally pull out the win will get a signed copy of my losing bracket with a personal message. Something along the lines of: “you cheating bastard, there’s a special place for you in hell for beating me! All the best, Undefeated” or something really sweet like that.

Can LSU Beat North Carolina?
[caption id="attachment_1562" align="aligncenter" width="330" caption="(ya, there's only 4 dogs and 5 play basketball, blow me)"]

Underdogs. Everyone loves an underdog. Who didnt root for Rocky? How awesome was it watching the Giants beat the mighty Patriots? You know deep down you were pulling for Sanjaya (American Idol reference). Its in our blood to get behind the little guy. Well, today…we, Tiger Nation, are the little guys. The latest odds at BetUS.com have LSU an 11 point dog to the big, bad North Carolina Tar Heels….or +600 if you wanted to bet it straight up. Oh ya, and the game is being played IN NORTH CAROLINA.
Can LSU beat North Carolina? The answer is yes…and no. LSU is 7-2 lifetime when trying to get to the sweet 16. However, if North Carolina has Ty Lawson and he can play at or near 100%, no, LSU cannot beat North Carolina. Its nothing against the Tigers. When North Carolina is at 100%, nobody can beat them. They’re the best team in the country. But if Lawson sits this one out and Carolina has to rely on Hansbrough, it will all come down to how tough Chris Johnson can play him and if he can avoid foul trouble. If you can tame Hansbrough, a team can handle UNC.
Don’t Count Us Out Yet

So we made it past Butler and are now rewarded with playing North Carolina in North Carolina, but don’t count us out quite yet. (even though I did in the first round versus Butler!) We played NCAA basketball royalty killer back in 2006 and could very well do it again this year.
There was no way our Tigers were going to beat the all mighty Duke Blue Devils to reach the Elite 8 and eventually the Final Four. But we did, with play that is very similar to how this team has played all year: hustle, heart and defense. Garrett Temple completely shut down national sweetie pie Gay Gay Redick (remember this pic?) and Coach K (is it me, or does his mouth look like an anus? sorry, had to ask, I’ll get on to Lou Holtz’s mouth in the football season) and there was just enough scoring from our offense to seal the win. Read the 2006 game recap here. Keep reading, I’m not done with you yet.
GAME TIME!!

Merry March Madness to all! LSU will tangle with Butler in a couple of hours. I’m very excited for the tournament, but a bit on edge about our tough first round opponent. The Tigers are 2 point favorites in the game. Some of the interesting prop bets at BetUS.com are listed after the jump. Hope you have a cool work environment that allows you to watch the game. GEAUX TIGERS!
ESPN Tournament Challenge
March Madness is finally here and the brackets are out! Unfortunately LSU is sitting in a horrible position right now with the possibility of having to play #1 seed North Carolina but the games are still fun to watch especially when you have a bracket going with your friends. It gives everyone an opportunity to see how horrible they are at picking winners.
Normally we have a bracket among a small group of friends but this year we decided to open it up to readers of LSUTOPIA to make it interesting. So, come sign up and make your picks!!! It will not cost you a thing and should be fun. Click this link to take you to the action –> http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/group?groupID=46847
