Is LSU Football’s ’09 Season Over Before it Begins?!?

78222634CP103_AllState_BCS_Just as Tiger fans were beginning to get excited about the upcoming football season, the LSU train has derailed before it even got moving.  About halfway through yesterday’s practice in a 7-man offense drill, Charles Scott, LSU’s star running back, ran into a defender while turned back towards the QB catching a pass.  The collision resulted in a clean break of the tibia, the largest of the two leg bones below the knee cap.

The injury is a devastating one to the Tigers and Scott’s season as it was reported that the recovery time will likely run through the end of the fall.  Sure there are other running backs on the roster, Keiland Williams, Richard Murphy and others, but Scott was the rock that LSU depended on last year and was going to look to the most this year.  More after the jump…..

This will possibly result in true freshman Michael Ford seeing more snaps in practice and maybe getting some playing time in games this season.  Charles will most likely receive a medical red shirt and hold on to his last year of eligibility and will play next season.

Just When You Thought You Were Safe From LSU Football Recruiting….

Bryce Brown

That’s right!  Rivals.com #1 rated player and top running back, Bryce Brown from Wichita, KS is visiting LSU this weekend.  Previously committed to Miami, he backed out and did not sign with the Hurricanes on Feb 4.  His visit to LSU has been talked about for about a week now, but I was skeptical he would actually make the trip.  As of this morning the plan was for him to arrive to campus today with his parents.  His father is from Bogalusa, LA which is only about 75 miles from Baton Rouge, as the crow flies.  He still has family living there.

He will get a first hand look at all that LSU has to offer to make him a star in college football.  The facilities here are second to none.  Just ask Charles Scott, Keiland Williams, or any of the other RB’s on the roster.

Picking up Brown would be hugemongous for this class.  The already signed Michael Ford, is a highly rated running back out of Leesville, LA.  The two together would be a dominant force in the backfield in years to come.  As of now, with Ford as the only high profile RB in this year’s signing class, Les Miles would definitely have to make signing another RB in next year’s class a priority.  However, if Brown were to sign with the Tigers, LSU recruiters could spend their efforts at other positions.  More after the jump…..

Russell Shepard, a ‘Class’ Act

russshepard2_22200I agree, it’s kind of a cheesy title, but it works.  We all heard or read the stories of Russell Shepard during the recruiting season.  Once he made the commitment to become an LSU Tiger, he started pushing for other high-profile, high school seniors he met to make the same commitment.  He was actually helping Coach Miles and staff recruit for the Tigers.  We heard the story about how he already knows his role on the team.  He knows he hasn’t accomplished anything yet and said he’d even take out the trash if they asked him to.  Not only is this guy going to be fun to watch on the field over the next few years, but he will also be a great example of a student-athlete to for others to follow.

After committing to Miles and the Tigers, Shepard enrolled at LSU in January to begin taking classes and practicing with the team.  ESPN has highlighted what a normal day is like for Russell now that he has made the transition to college at LSU.  It includes, class starting at 7:30am, strolling through campus and “free speech alley”, a visit to the COX Academic Center (which a lot of athletes claim as a big part of why they chose LSU), lunch in the Union, being recognized by some new fans, and work-outs with the team.  Here is the link to the video you don’t want to miss (after the jump):

John Chavis looks to be LSU’s next D-Coordinator

john-chavis1It’s been a busy day for sports news with 3 NFL coaches being fired, an interesting NFL playoff lineup, and Nick Saban suspends Alabama’s Outland Trophy winner and All-American, OT Andre Smith, from the Sugar Bowl for “improper dealings with an agent”; he’s likely to enter the NFL draft (top 5 projection)…… He was sent home from New Orleans soon after the team arrived to continue preparations for Utah.

However, news also broke that Les Miles might have found his new Defensive Coordinator. John Chavis has coached at Tennessee under the recently departed Phil Fulmer for the last 14 seasons. It was also reported that LSU made a more lucrative offer than Clemson, who was also trying to snag Chavis. Despite the Vols’ struggles this year, they finished 4th nationally in total defense. They have had other solid defenses over his tenure there, including holding LSU to only one offensive touchdown in last year’s SEC Championship game.

New Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin will be bringing in his dad, Monte, to take over at Chavis’ former position. Chavis may also be bring with him to LSU a defensive tackles coach and a defensive ends coach, that both coached with him at Tennessee.

Recruiting Still Looking Good

LSU has jumped up to the number 1 spot in recruiting for Rivals.com and number 2 for ESPN. I’m not big on putting all my eggs in the preseason recruiting rank, but let’s hope we can hold on to all these recruits and turn things around quickly with all the new talent.

Eight LSU Tigers Named to AP All-SEC Teams

Eight members of the LSU footbal team were awarded All-SEC between the first and second teams.  Brandon Lafell, Herman Johnson, and Rahim Alem (despite his ill-advised, ill-timed field goal attempt keeping Arkansas’ drive alive in the 4th quarter!….still mad…) each made first team.  Charles Scott, Colt David, Ciron Black, Tyson Jackson, and Darry Beckwith made the second team.

It’s a great individual accomplishment for each these guys, but I hope it’s also bittersweet for them.  I’d like to think that each of them would happily relieve themselves of any individual attention for LSU as a team to have had a better season and to finish it on a strong note with a bowl win.  Be a team player today! (Play on Hal Sutton’s “Be the right club today!”)  Hometown hero …….anyway……

LSU has turned out 21 All-SEC players since Les Miles arrived here in 2005, 15 on the first team alone.  Another fact for that ass is that LSU has had at least 3 players on the All-SEC first team since 2003.  I doubt anyone has argued that we haven’t had the talent in those years……

Time to face the facts LSU fans

Saturday night’s loss to Ole Miss might have been just what the Tiger faithful needed to move out of dreamland and over to reality.  Countless times this season I was called a pessimist, asshole, mf’er, and accused of being too hard on Jarrett Lee and the coaching staff.  I think now, after being totally exposed in nearly every aspect of the game on Saturday, most fans have drifted over from “Miles and Co. can do no wrong land” to “what the fuck is going on here….ville.”  There’s nothing “un-fan” or “fair weather” about questioning those in authority.  There’s nothing “un-Tiger” about saying that Jarrett Lee sucks and is not the future of LSU football.  People make bad decisions and they need to be held accountable….just like you or I would be if we did some stupid shit at our jobs.  On Saturday, I root for the Tigers so much it hurts.  The rest of the week, I criticize.  There’s nothing wrong with it.

Les Miles can be wrong.  He has been several times this year.  It took me about 5 minutes of seeing Jordan Jefferson on the field to realize that he has been wrong for the past month.  Anyone with any sort of football knowledge could tell in the first two series after JJ took over, that he should have been starting for LSU.  Les and company made a bad choice.  Jordan Jefferson is the future of this program and should have been given the opportunity to get some real game time experience.  To the “he wasnt ready” claim that he has spit for the past several weeks, my rebuttal would be…..its impossible for him to have done any worse.  Andrew Hatch doesnt have it.  Jarrett Lee tried.  Some have it, some dont.  But no outcome of any game would have been any different with Jefferson at the QB position. We still lose the games we lost, and we still win the games we won.  All the while getting our future starter (yes, he’s going to start next year) the experience he so desperately needs.
