Marcus Thornton x Two More Great Games = SEC Player of the Week

LSU Oklahoma St BasketballAfter coming up huge once again for the Tigers in two wins last week over Florida and the first at Kentucky in 20 years, Marcus Thornton was awarded SEC Player of the Week for the 2nd time this year.  He scored 32 points, had 5 assists and 5 rebounds against the Gators at home on ESPN and had 23 points (15 in 2nd half), 9 rebounds, and 4 assists Saturday in Lexington on CBS.  His averages for the week:  27.5 ponts, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.

One of the assists led to the game winning shot from Tasmin Mitchell against Kentucky.  Thornton was the decoy and dribbled off Tasmin’s pick, attracting two defenders, leaving Mitchell open for the three pointer.

Thornton is doing it all for LSU this year including shooting 40% three pointers and 75% free throws, while only sitting for less than 9 minutes a game.  There is no doubt that he leaves it all out on the floor each night and now the nation is starting to learn who he is after the two performances that earned him this honor were on national TV.  As posted before, Thornton is the same height and build as a few NBA players you might know….. Dwayne Wade, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd….  Anyway, since Thornton will definitely be leaving LSU this year as he is a senior, the NBA is obvious as the next level for him.  I think he could make a good fit there.  He is very athletic and aggressive for his size.  But I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, he still has a few more games to play as a Tiger.

LSU Outlasts Florida in Shootout, 81-75

32 points, including six three pointers, 10-11 on freebies, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds….. Marcus Thornton gave a huge effort in front of a huge crowd and a national audience on ESPN to lift the Tigers past Florida Tuesday night in the PMAC.

It was certainly everything a shootout is meant to be.  Did I mention Thortnon had 6 three’s, 5 in the first half?  As well as LSU played in the first half, Florida matched everything the Tigers threw at them.  LSU may not have played their best defense in the first half, but neither team could miss.  It was back and forth the entire 20 minutes.  Florida went into the locker room with a four point lead.

LSU got some great contributions for Garrett Temple with 21 points and 7 rebounds (3-4 three’s, 4-4 free throws).  Tasmin Mitchell had 12 and 8 and Bo Spencer had 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.  The scary stat, which has become a trend lately…….3, yes 3 bench points.  Terry Martin came off the bench to hit a jumper, get fouled and make the free throw…..that’s it.  The lack of a solid sixth man or any bench play for that matter may hurt the Tigers in March.

LSU Basketball Up to #18 in Both Polls

The LSU basketball team continues to rise in the polls after two more conference wins last week.  The Tigers are now ranked #18 in both polls.  The rest of the polls are here:  http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/rankings

This will be a tough week for the Tigers with Florida coming to town tomorrow night to play in the PMAC.  The Tigers will have to opportunity to not only keep their SEC winning streak alive, but also show the country what they’re made of since the game will be on ESPN at 8pm.  This coming Saturday, the Tigers will visit Lexington to take on Kentucky and can be viewed on CBS.

These are two great chances for the Tigers to impress nation-wide viewers with Selection Sunday approaching.  Wins against both teams may not do much to boost LSU’s RPI, but since humans do play a part in the selection of seeds for the NCAA tournament, it would leave a nice lasting impression to make it to next Sunday with an improved 25-4 record.

Florida wins BCS Championship, We Still Have to Hear Why USC Deserves a Share!?

bcs09Thank you Florida for showing the nation that there is no conference better than the SEC.  Tim Tebow shows that no one on that field was a better competitor than he is.   I hope he goes pro so we don’t have to play against him anymore.

After the game, Rece Davis opens up the split national championship discussion to Mark May and Lou Holtz on ESPN.  Both May and Holtz say that USC deserves a share without hesitation and May went as far to say specifically that USC would beat Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma if they played each of them.  For USC to earn a share of the title, they would have to finish #1 in the last AP poll of the year.  Here’s where I’m confused…..take a look at the most recent AP poll (Dec. 7):

1. Florida (50) 12-1 1,602
 2. Oklahoma (9) 12-1 1,540
 3. Texas (6) 11-1 1,530
 4. Alabama 12-1 1,410
 5. USC 11-1 1,372

Ok, so we are to believe that a 14 point win over Penn State should gain USC the majority of the first place votes and more than 200 total votes to take over first?!?!  According to the BCS and USA Today Coaches rankings, Florida beat a higher ranked team tonight, USC beat a team ranked 2 and 3 spots lower than them.  More after the jump.

Florida had 50 first place votes before tonight’s so called ”championship game”…..Why do we call it that, if it doesn’t settle it?  Anyway, so you’re telling me, Mark May and Lou Holtz, that the Trojans beating Penn State is enough to take Florida’s votes away and give them to USC?  There is no way this can/should happen and if I hear anymore about it, I’m going to be sick.  We all know that Lou Holtz is an idiot, but come on Mark May….you’re better than that.  I don’t know if Corso or Herbstreit had any comments, but I assume if they did, they’d also agree with Holtz and May.  It doesn’t make any sense.  If any team deserves to jump a team in the polls, it’s Utah.  USC should be ranked no higher than 4th.  Florida, Texas, Utah -1,2,3.

The Sunday Morning Hangover: LSU Exposed

Well, at least we know.  The cat is officially out of the bag.  Unfortunately, LSU is not as good as most people thought.

LSU got absolutely demolished last night in Gainsville in every single aspect of the game.  Some quick bullets of what we learned last night.

- The defense is not near as good as everyone thought.  The D was pretty much a non-factor throughout the entire game.  Florida ran when they wanted and once they got bored with that, they threw it over our heads. Florida and Co. had an answer for the feared Tiger D last night and I suspect that a couple more teams will as well.

Wednesday LSU Hype and the Highly Underrated Weather Forecasts

Wednesday is the first day of the week that I usually always wake up and begin to have anxiety for the upcoming LSU game.  Regardless of whether we won the previous weekend or not, by Wednesday we are pretty much over a loss or finished riding the win and ready for the next one.

This Wednesday morning feels a little different with the bye week preceding it.  Last weekend, I wasnt sure what to do with myself without an LSU game to watch.  We had to find a game on TV, most likely an SEC game, and pretend to pull for one team over the other, even if we hated both.  Even Les Miles expressed his own sense of awkwardness on Saturday saying that after he watched his two sons play their pee-wee league football games on Saturday morning, he felt uneasy wishing the Tigers were playing that day.

Today however, I am sure that I share the same sentiment with Tiger fans around the country….I can’t wait for Saturday!  The game with Florida Saturday night on CBS has the makings to be as much of a fireworks show as last years extremely hard-fought 28-24 Tiger victory in Baton Rouge.  This years game has the same at stake for both teams.  A loss for LSU would take the SEC West steering wheel out of our hands.  A loss by Florida very well could take them out of the SEC East race, not to mention the national title picture.  Some experts are still picking Florda to be in Miami on January 8.  www.cfn.scout.com The thought of this is enough to rile up Tiger fans.  Who knows what it does to the guys wearing the gold helmets….
