LSU Spring Football Takes a Break, Les Miles Handles Toughest Job #4

borat-spring-break1Following the 2nd full scrimmage of the 2009 Spring football season, Les Miles seemed pleased with the players’ efforts as well as the progress made on offense, defense, and special teams.  Both offensive units ran roughly 30 plays each as did special teams.

Miles said, “It was a pretty even go; the offense made some plays and the defense made some plays.  There were a lot of ones versus ones and twos versus twos.  Progress was made, but we are a long way away.”

He singled out Jarrett Lee, Charles Scott, Keiland Williams, and Richard Murphy on offense and Drake Nevis, Harry Coleman, Chad Jones, Karnell Hatcher and Pep Livingston on defense.

Jarrett Lee threw two touchdown passes, one to Brandon LaFell and another to newly converted tight end, Deangelo Peterson.  The offense also accounted for another touchdown on the ground by Keiland Williams.  I really thought the Jarrett Lee days were behind us, but it sounds like he is making positive strides.

This was a much better showing for the offense than in the 1st scrimmage, in which the defense controlled the ball.  This made Coach Miles happy and he said that each of the quarterbacks were pretty even with their play.  “Jarrett Lee threw a few more completed passes and Jordan Jefferson made a couple of nice throws and completed touchdown passes throughout the scrimmage.”

The coaching staff is still searching for a fit for true freshman/lightning bolt, Russell Shepard.  Trust me, he’ll see plenty of the field right away.  Some of the fastest players on the team even comment on how fast he is.

Les Miles was a happy man after this scrimmage.  He let the guys go on their university-wide spring break and seemed to feel good about where the Tigers are right now.  However, as quoted above, he knows they have a long way to go….typical coach-talk.

Miles has definitely had an above average career so far at LSU.  He has a good record (42-11 (.792)), which includes 4 bowl wins in 4 tries, one of which is a national championship.  It should also be noted that all LSU’s four bowl wins under Miles were more than decisive.  40-3 over Miami in ’05, 41-14 over Notre Dame in ’06, 38-24 over Ohio State for it all in ’07, and 38-3 over the favored Georgia Tech in Atlanta this past season.

You give Miles a month to prepare for a team and he destroys them (see above bowl game scores).

However, LSU may not have had the dream season last year, but Miles certainly knows how to handle the pressure that comes along with being the head football coach for the Tigers.  In fact, in a recent article on The State.com, the LSU Football head coaching job was ranked #4 in the country in college sports’ toughest jobs, behind only Kentucky basketball, BAMA football, and Notre Dame football.

Last year was a rough one for everybody.  It seemed the Tigers could never really get going in any game.  They weren’t focused, interceptions were thrown and then run back for touchdowns, blah, blah, blah….you know, normal stuff.  But this year, the Tigers are mad as hell and they want to get back what they lost in ’08.  There’s a new attitude on defense with the new coaches and the offense has more weapons at it’s disposal as well as the reliable ones from past years that decided to stick around one more year (Scott, K. Williams, Holliday, and LaFell,).  It is exciting and I speak for all Tiger football fans out there when I say, I can’t wait to see how they look in the Spring game on April 18.  Tickets for sale here.  Just enter the promo code, ‘SPRINGGAME09′ for a $1 ticket to print at home.

Enjoy the break guys.  Go to the beach, get your club on, hang out with a pretty lady or two, etc. …… Just come back as fired up as you left.  This year, there’ a lot of work to be done.

GEAUX TIGERS!!!!

ESPN Spotlights Chad Jones

chad-jonesWith the LSU Men’s basketball team ending their season on Saturday, fans are now turing their focus to the women’s team, who will play Louisville for a spot in the Sweet 16, Tuesday night at 8:30.  We are also enjoying LSU baseball and Spring Football.

Recently, ESPN blogger Chris Low posted and piece on our own Chad Jones.  Currently, he is taking a break from baseball and working out with the football team.  It is said that he will make the transition back to the diamond after the football spring game on April 18.  More after the jump……

“We’ve got talent. We had talent last year,” Jones said. “There’s no way a team should put up points on us like they did last year. With this new defensive scheme, we’re going to be rocking this year. It’s going to be LSU defense the way it’s supposed to be — turnovers, three-and-outs and getting the ball back to our offense as quick as possible.”

LSU Baseball is Good! 16-0 Good

[caption id="attachment_1451" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="(Mitchell doing his thing)"](Mitchell doing his thing)[/caption]

The number one collegiate baseball team in allll of the land, your LSU Tigers, improved to 7-0 yesterday as they swept Central Florida in front of 4,303 fans at the Box.  Leon Landry, Austin Nola, and Chad Jones all had solo shots while Jared Mitchell blasted two shots in the 16-0 route.  Austin Ross (2-0) got the win, shutting out UCF in six innings of work.  The Tigers hit the road for the first time as they take on UNO on Tuesday.

I mean really….is the football team really going to have the lowest post season ranking of the big 3?  If you say you called it, you lie….YOU LIE!!!!

LSU Football Coaches Should be Docked a Week’s Pay

What happened Saturday night in Gainesville was embarrassing for the LSU players, coaches and fans.  A thirty point loss to a team that recently lost to perennial SEC bottom feeder, Ole Miss, at home.  However, the Gators could still taste last year’s loss in Death Valley and may have been even more fired up because of the trash talk that occurred during the week prior.  Florida came ready to play and was due to for their first complete game of the year.

LSU on the other hand, had an extra week to prepare for Florida.  The players and coaches even took the previous weekend off to visit family and get any other personal distractions out of the way so they could focus on the Gators.  The Tigers were also due for their first complete game of the season.  However, when the game had concluded, I found myself asking, what really happened behind closed doors in the LSU offices the last two weeks?  What films were they watching?  How lackadaisical were they in their preparations?  Because on the field in the Swamp Saturday night it showed.  LSU’s defense had no answers to anything the Gators threw at them early on.  The Gator offense’s swing passes to running backs were common and no adjustments were made to stop them.  We found ourselves in 2nd and short situations all regularly.  LSU’s “fearsome front four” were pushed around all night allowing for over 250 yards rushing.  On the other side of the ball, LSU’s offense seemed to have no real game-plan except only to try something and then react to what Florida was giving us, rather than be proactive and attack the Gators by mixing up the plays we have and use the “talent” that we posses on the team.  The quarterback play was spotty and inconsistent.  Passes that could have been taken in for touchdowns were thrown behind receivers causing them to dive for them (with no YAC (yards after catch)) or drop them.  Instead, we just sat back and let them take it to us.  For this, I blame the coaches.

Another mistake were some of the defensive mis-matches in the secondary.  Why in this world would we have Danny McCray, who has continuously let us down this season, guard Florida’s version of “The Flash”, Percy Harvin?  McCray misjudged a poorly thrown, should have been intercepted ball, from Tebow on the 3rd play of the game, tipped it to make an even easier catch for Harvin.  Harvin politely said, ”thank you” and took it to the house.  I understand that maybe the position McCray plays should guard Harvin in that situation, but where the hell is Chad Jones!?!?!  Maybe Jones did something in practice to keep him on the bench, nevertheless, the coaches limited his playing time.  Also on that same play, the other safety made a giant mistake by biting on something, bringing him closer to the line of scrimmage and away from where the pass was intended.    Meanwhile in this blogger’s opinion, Jones is one of the best football players we have on the entire team.  He has the potential to be the next Charles Woodson.  For this, I blame the coaches.
