The Tigers picked up a road win against Alabama last night coming back to win 8-5.  LSU was down 5-2 going into the top of the 8th and scored 2, followed by 4 runs in the 9th and pulled out the win.  Ryan Schimpf hit his eighth homerun of the season and Jared Mitchell hit the game winning double with two outs in the 9th.  Reliever Nolan Cain (3-0) picked up the win and Manny Ott pitched very well and earned his 7th save of the season.

Tonight at 6:05, LSU (25-8, 9-4) will go for their ninth straight SEC series win dating back to last season.  Again, you can catch the tonight’s and tomorrow’s games on Cox Sports TV, if you are watching in the designated viewing area.

Marcus Thornton x Two More Great Games = SEC Player of the Week

LSU Oklahoma St BasketballAfter coming up huge once again for the Tigers in two wins last week over Florida and the first at Kentucky in 20 years, Marcus Thornton was awarded SEC Player of the Week for the 2nd time this year.  He scored 32 points, had 5 assists and 5 rebounds against the Gators at home on ESPN and had 23 points (15 in 2nd half), 9 rebounds, and 4 assists Saturday in Lexington on CBS.  His averages for the week:  27.5 ponts, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists.

One of the assists led to the game winning shot from Tasmin Mitchell against Kentucky.  Thornton was the decoy and dribbled off Tasmin’s pick, attracting two defenders, leaving Mitchell open for the three pointer.

Thornton is doing it all for LSU this year including shooting 40% three pointers and 75% free throws, while only sitting for less than 9 minutes a game.  There is no doubt that he leaves it all out on the floor each night and now the nation is starting to learn who he is after the two performances that earned him this honor were on national TV.  As posted before, Thornton is the same height and build as a few NBA players you might know….. Dwayne Wade, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd….  Anyway, since Thornton will definitely be leaving LSU this year as he is a senior, the NBA is obvious as the next level for him.  I think he could make a good fit there.  He is very athletic and aggressive for his size.  But I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, he still has a few more games to play as a Tiger.

LSU vs Kentucky Today on CBS at 3pm Baton Rouge time, 10pm Geneva, Switzerland time

Trent Johnson’s LSU Tigers (24-4) will take on the Kentucky Wildcats (19-9) at Rupp Arena today, live on CBS.  For those of you (myself included) that live outside of what I have dubbed “the bubble,” getting a basketball game that you can actually watch on tv is quite a treat.  I cannot begin to tell you the frustration I get trying to follow a game on ESPN GameCast.  Anyway, LSU is riding a 12 game conference winning streak and can lock up an outright SEC title with a win today.  Rupp is a very tough place to play, and the Tigers have not have very much success there over the years, so I’m cautiously optimistic about this one.  No matter what happens today, the Tigers are tournament bound and will be no lower than a 6 seed IMHO.

In other news, the baseball team moved to 5-0 yesterday with a 13-4 demasculinization of Central Florida.  Leon Landry homered, DJ LeMahieu hit two dongs, and Sean Ochinko went 4 for 4 in the ass whipping.    The Tigers go for 6-0 today at 2pm CST.

LSU Welcomes Saban and the Highly Underrated SEC Gameday Weather Forecasts

Saturday night will be the first time Nick Saban has lead a team into Death Valley since LSU followed him in and beat Ole Miss 27-24 in November 2004.  LSU will play host to Saban’s Crimson Tide of Alabama at 2:30 CT on CBS.

Saban certainly left large shoes to fill when he left the Tigers to coach in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins.  Coach Saban brought LSU 3 bowl wins in 5 tries, 2 SEC Championships, and one National Champonship.  Not a bad record for 5 years on the job.  It is an understatement that Saban gave Tiger fans something to be proud of again.  Some of us can still barely remember the days before him of Gerry Dinardo or even Coach Curly Hallman.  Those tough times in Tiger history seem almost like ancient memories now.  Saban turned it around here at LSU and we were grateful…….

……….Until he lied and took the head coach opening left at Alabama after the departure of Mike Shula.  Saban repeatedly told the media and Miami Dolphin fans, “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach”.  Well we all know what happened next and before we knew it, Nick Saban was wearing a crimson tie standing in front of Bama fans saying how happy he was to be there.  Rumors have spread that his wife was the main cause for the decision to leave LSU for bigger city, but then realized  how much she liked the college town.  Either way it worked out great for the Saban family.  He has lied his way to a $4 Million per year salary.

LSU Gears up For the Bulldogs and the Highly Underrated SEC Gameday Weather Forecasts

LSU is now in countdown mode for yet another huge SEC game.  This week it’s against the University of Georgia, a team who was ranked #1 in preseason polls.  Even after an early loss to Alabama by the Bulldogs, this game still has great implications in the SEC and National Title races.  Georgia is trying to stay in the hunt for the SEC East, and LSU in the West.  Tiger stadium will be rocking yet again as this game guarantees to be explosive.

There really isn’t any bad blood between these two teams, as they don’t play every year.  In recent years however, LSU beat Georgia twice in their National Title year of 2003, once in a close game in Tiger Stadium and the other in a romp for the SEC Championship.  LSU went on to beat Oklahoma for its first BCS title.  Georgia got their revenge in 2005 when the two teams met again in Atlanta, GA for the SEC title.  Georgia won that day 34-14.  LSU went on to defeat Miami in the Peach bowl, 40-3, in Matt Flynn’s coming out party.  So there may not be any bad blood between the Tigers and Bulldogs, but these guys know what’s on the line and you can bet the game will be hard fought.

LSU is back in Tiger Stadium after a 1-1 road trip.  The Tigers have played very well in Death Valley under Les Miles’ tenure, only losing twice……both in overtime with one of the losses in triple overtime (Tennessee in 2005, Arkansas 2007).  Another LSUTOPIA.com writer’s namesake comes from a quote of Miles from last season, when he explained how LSU was “Undefeated in Regulation”.  He’s right! When the Tigers have played in Tiger Stadium since 2005, they are nearly unstoppable.
