Barkevious Mingo wins ‘Name of the Year’

barkevious-mingoYep.  It is a real contest.  Name of the Year is a group that was founded in 1983 and every year they pick the best name.  I guess once you’ve been in the contest, you can’t be again….. who knows.

Anyway, Barkevious Mingo the new LSU Tiger linebacker has won it.  We knew the name was awesome when we first started hearing about him in the recruiting season.  He will join the team this summer I believe.  In this contest, he was up against names like Chew Kok…..really?!?, Atilla Bucko, Taco Vandervelde, Crystal Metheny, and Nutritious Love.  I know, I can’t believe those are names either.

The names are arranged in a 64 name name-off like college basketball.  Once it was down to two, Mingo was up against Iris Macadangdang.  LOL!  Over 10,000 people voted.

National Signing Day: What does it all mean??

les-miles-nutsWARNING:  You need to get ready for it.  That ridiculous co-worker of yours is going to tell you this morning about how awesome LSU is going to be next year because we had a good recruiting class.  He’ll tell you how we signed all these massive recruits and regurgitate a bunch of stats to you that he memorized in the last 24 hours…half of which are completely wrong.  This phenomina happens each and every year after signing day and lasts about a week.  The fact is, 80% of these guys wont see the field at all in 2009, and 95% of them wont make any kind of impact.  I’m happy as a pig in shit we nailed damn near all the guys that we went after, but let’s have these guys get through prom before we annoint them BCS champions!

Looking back at yesterday, Kenny Bell’s defection to Bama isnt that big of a deal and Auburn can have DeAngelo Benton because someone told me that he’s legally retarded (but dont tell him I told you cuz I’m pretty sure he’s bigger than me).  Trent Richardson was just pulling everyone’s chain and the rest of the guys who went elsewhere today were longshots at best.  However, I would like to add that Nick Saban is Satan…he clubs baby seals and I have a friend who had a friend who said they he knows that Nick is meanie head pecker face.

As for the good stuff, on paper…this class is a brick shithouse.  I mean, studs at every position.  Randle, Shepard, Davenport, Montgomery, Mingo, Downs, Loston…the list goes on and on.  Randle and Shepard will probably find the field next year in the receiving corps and make a difference.  Downs, Davenport, Loston, and Montgomery will probably start to work into the lineup starting next year.  And Mingo….a friggin 6′ 5″ LB that runs a 4.6.  Sweeeeeet.

As for Janzen Jackson, I guess we’ll see.  Obviously we’d love to have him, but if he takes off too…it wont be the end of the world.  Anyway, the full class is after the jump.

Stop Holding your Breath, Signing Day is Here!

Alright Tiger fans, we can all get ready to take a long, deep breath because National Signing Day is finally upon us. Things are certainly looking good for the Tigers ’09 signing class, but I won’t say anymore than that for fear of jinxing us. It was very nice to get an early commitment from a guy ranked number 1 on everyone’s Coolest Name Board, LB Barkevious Mingo. Don’t believe me? Go here and eat it. I hope you all can fake sick take a personal day from work and make it out to the Bash. And for those first timers out there here are a few things I’ve learned from my previous trips to the river front: after jump

Recruiting Update

background-01Well with this past weekend not yielding any results for the Tigers, the future still looks bright. LSU is still in the running for Reuben Randle, Sam Montgomery, Xavier Su’a Filo, Jarvis Jones,  Barkevious Mingo, and others. If the National Signing Day was today, we would be in the running for the #1 recruiting class and definitely a top 5, which isn’t too shabby considering the wreck this season was.  I am hoping that we can land Randle, as he is an in state kid, the overall #1 player in the country, and if you watched any of the US Army High School All American game, you would know why we want him. He is almost a mirror image of Julio Jones with size, speed, and the other intangibles of a great WR. Randle is a game breaker and has that ability to take a 5 yard pass and turn it into an 80 yard TD.  He also likes to bring the wood, kinda similar to Michael Clayton, unlike some of our current receivers who shy away. With Debose to UF, I really believe he is a must get for Miles. Montgomery is a South Carolina kid who is a beast at DE. He will be a tough get for us but could come as a surprise on NSD. Su’a Filo is an OL from Provo, UT and is legit, which is according to Montgomery who went against him in the UA All American game. I also think that he will be a tough get for us, but would be a nice addition and you can never have enough OL. Jarvis Jones is a Georgia kid and is almost certainly a Florida get, but what I don’t get is how on God’s green earth these kids don’t see what we see. How do you expect PT when they(UF) more than likely are gonna sign 3-4star LBs and possiblly Jelani Jenkins a 5 star LB. I don’t know what crack Urban Meyer is selling, but it’s gotta be some good shit. Our LB position is so weak compared to the rest of the perrenial powerhouse teams and how could you not want to come to LSU and showcase your skills? Barkevious “Ke-Ke” Mingo is an in state LB who is supposedly an LSU lean. He played for West Monroe and is really a big project with a lot of upside.  At 6’5, 205 he has the frame to add 20-30 lbs to and I think is only playing his second year of organized football. He goes with the saying of you can’t teach size and speed.  Even though he is still learning the game, the recruiters think he is pretty damn good as he is a 4 star and one of the top 5 in the state.  With all these recruits still available, we should be okay with getting a few and hopefully the rest of the recruiting period will be better than this past weekend.
