LSU Baseball Sweeps Auburn

Well its about f’n time!  The LSU Tiger baseball team completed a three game sweep of SEC West rival Auburn on Sunday by a score of 7-6.  Third baseman Tyler Hanover had a three-run dong and Jared Mitchell had three hits in front of 5,998 fans at Alex Box Stadium.  Reliever Daniel Bradshaw (3-0) got the win and Matty Ott recorded his 10th save of the year.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of the Tigers kicking ass and taking names.  The team has been pretty all over the place the last month, so a series like this could be just what they need.  The baseball Tigers return to the field on Tuesday when they meet Tulane at the Box.

Jam-Packed Weekend for LSU Sports Begins Today

lsu-logoIt all starts this afternoon as the LSU Men’s Tennis team takes on Auburn at 2pm in “Dub” Robinson Stadium.  The Tennis team hasn’t gotten much pub this year, but they are ranked #14 in the country as SEC gears up to start today.  The team is led by Senior Michael Venus, who is ranked #9 in the country’s top singles players.  Along with freshman, Neal Skupski from Liverpool, they are the #13 doubles team.  Auburn comes equipped with the #11 doubles team and should prove for a tough match for the LSU duo.  Senior James Clusky from Ireland has also been playing well.   The Tigers will also host #20 Alabama on Sunday at 1pm.  If you’re in town and not busy, head over there today or after the baseball game Sunday, which I’ll get to in a minute.

Later tonight, the LSU Baseball Tigers will begin a three-game series with the Big Ten’s Illinois at 7pm at Alex Box.  LSU is red hot to start the season outscoring opponents 109-25 in nine games so far.  Also, all of LSU’ starting position players are hitting over .300.  The Tigers are undefeated and are the #1 team in all the land in 3 different polls this week (Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, and USA Today/ESPN).  The Tigers will play on Saturday at 2pm and again on Sunday at 11am…have a  bloody mary and go experience the Tigers win again in the new “Box”.  More after the jump……

The women’s basketball will be playing Miss. St. in the second round of the SEC tournament tonight at 9pm.  The ladies are 17-9, 10-4 this season having won 8 of their last 10.  Much like the men, the women are overachieving this year as well.  If they win, they will play the winner of Georgia-Vanderbilt on Saturday at 8pm.  If they win that, they will play for the championship to be held at 6:30 on Sunday.  all games are being played at Little Rock, AR’s Alltel Arena.

LSU Stumbles in Final Home Game vs. Vandy, 75-67

[caption id="attachment_1468" align="alignleft" width="229" caption="Coulda used him tonight.....oh, and nuts in the face  :) "]If only.......[/caption]

LSU had only a single lead in this one….. 2-0.  After that, the Tigers’ goal closed up and they decided defense was overrated.  We knew Vanderbilt had a big guy that would give us trouble.  We didn’t think A.J. Ogilvy would come in and score a career high 33 points.  The ‘Dores took complete advantage of mismatches all night and the Tigers had little to answer back to keep their 10 game winning streak alive. More after the jump……

Not to mention, LSU shot an abysmal 36% to Vandy’s 51% tonight.  The Tigers also struggled from the line shooting only 68%, and from the 3-point line, 28%.

LSU Basketball Moves Further Up in National Polls, #11 & #12

The Tigers piled on two more wins last week and continued their hot streak in the SEC.  Now, LSU has won 13 straight conference games, 10 straight overall and for the 3rd week in a row, rise in the national ranks.  The Tigers find themselves at #11 in today’s ESPN/USA Today poll and #12 in the AP poll.  See the new polls here.

Some quick poll-analysis: the only teams with higher winning percentages than LSU are UCONN, UNC, Memphis, Pitt, and Oklahoma.  The top 10 in both polls are almost identical, however, the 11-20 ranks of both polls involve the same teams, but the order is comparably different.  For example, Villanova is #11 in the AP and #16 in the ESPN/USA Today.  (more after the jump…)

All that doesn’t really matter, just something I noticed.

Barkley on Auburn Hire “That’s Tuuuurrrrriiibul”

Sir Charles is up in arms about the hiring of Gene Chizik as Auburn’s new head football coach. Chizik took over a difficult rebuilding project at Iowa State and went 5-19 in his first two seasons as a head coach after successful turns as defensive coordinator at Auburn and Texas.

I can honestly say I agree with Barkley about not liking this hire, but for a whole load of different reasons. Sir Charles pulled the only card in the deck that trumps them all: the race card. Here’s a quote from ESPN on his thoughts of the hire (whole story there too).

Open Thread: A Mid-Season Review

On ESPN today they had an article discussing each of the conferences at the mid-point of the season. Who are the biggest surprises, disappointments, offensive and defensive MVP’s.

So what do you think? This is an open discussion. I will give my thoughts on the SEC but feel free to discuss other conferences or all of D-I. If you don’t like my picks they are open to bashing :)

Biggest surprises – Honestly, it would be easy for me to say Vanderbilt but I am going with Alabama. They were not highly ranked at the beginning of the season and they have been very impressive so far. This is a young team and it just goes to show that Saban is a really good coach. I also think Vanderbilt will trail off in the second half of the season.
