As mentioned in a previous post, a good friend of ours is the pitching coach for the Colonels of Nicholls St.  I’ve known him since little league and we played pretty much every sport you can think of together.  Baseball though, has been his true love and passion since we were kids.  And you could see it all over his face last night as the Colonels took down the Tigers 3-1. 

His last trip to Baton Rouge was for a game against Southern University.  Nicholls got somewhere around 17 hits in the game, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Jaguars.  So, of course going into it, we thought they wouldn’t have enough to beat our precious #1 LSU Tigers while on the road again.  It was Nicholls St’s first win over the Tigers since 1994 (3-2 in Thibodaux), their first win in Baton Rouge since 1989, and their second time to beat a #1 Tigers team.  They last did it in 1986.

The Nicholls St pitchers came into the new Alex Box with all the confidence in the world and limited LSU to only one run on only 4 hits, also recording 15 ground outs.  They started a freshman and played 7 other pitchers, but it was a good strategy as the Tigers had no answer.  LSU went to the dugout with countless 3 up, 3 downs and Nicholls on the other hand did just enough to get their 3 runs on 5 hits, and the win.
