So did you know LSU had a boxing group/squad/pride/gaggle/litter/whatever you call a boxing team? I didn’t, but now I do and feel smarter for it. And not only did we have a team, we won individual national championships with “Pee Wee” Moss in 1949 and Tad Thrash in 1950(kick ass boxing name). LSU will be honoring Mr. Moss this weekend by having him throw out the first pitch on Saturday against Florida. Go here and read (ya, I stole their picture! Go eat some doo doo) the article on these fellas, they are some cool ass old dudes and I would love to hear their stories. Mainly because they have quotes like this , “My brother used to come up behind me, grab me by the back of the pants and holler ‘Boy, where did your behind go!?’,” said Moss(that’s hot). And just look at those gloves! That would be like getting hit in the head with a brick wrapped in cheesecloth! (yeah, it’s one word. I looked it up ya dummy) I personally would LOVE to have boxing back as a recognized NCAA sport. The NCAA stopped sponsoring boxing in 1960 for some reason. How cool would it be to see Tyson Jackson kick the shit out of Saint Tebow?!? I’ll await your non-comments.
here’s my non-comment (lol!)……
This is awesome! We should write to the NCAA to allow boxing again. Then we need to make a trip to the most run-down gym in Philadelphia and recruit some guys. SWEET!
I wonder how Pee Wee got his nickname?
I want royalties for my boxing graphic.
Check’s in the mail!
These guys threw out the first pitches at the baseball game Saturday. Those were the last pitches I remember. Damn you Billy and your whiskey.
I was in junior high school in Baton Rouge when LSU had a boxing program. I went to all the matches. If you think the fans go crazy at LSU football games you should have seen them packed in the old Ag Center when LSU took on such national college boxing powers as Maryland, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
I remember LSU names like Bobby Jackson, Ronnie Schulingcamp and heavyweights Crowe Peel and Paul Miller.
Picture a football game atmospgere in the packed Ag Center, LSU is tied 3-3 in a 7 fight match with Wisconsin. It all comes down to the heavyweight match. Big Crowe Peel of LSU is bleeding from the mouth and nose and so is his opponent. Peel lands a big left hook and the crowd toars like the Tigers just scored a touchdown in Tiger Stadium. Peel throws a big right and it’s lights out for his opponemnt who hits the deck ike a lead weight. LSY WINS!!! And the crowd brings the rafters down with a thnderous roar.
Let me tell you something. Boxing was BIG at LSU back in those days. And that’s a fact.
